Impulse in Art
Impulse in Art workshops explore the use of Impulse within the artistic process, utilising Sandford Meisner’s repetition exercise as a central touchstone. This is an exercise used by actors to develop their expressive palette, learn to act on their impulses and create connection and presence and can be used by anyone seeking the same in their creative practice. This is underpinned by introducing Tenderness & Enchantment as guiding principles to develop receptivity to the moment and other artists, and what is being offered in this moment to moment exercise regarding artistic freedom. Movement forms are also engaged, anchoring exploration into embodied states, and working with Alexander Technique principles as a liberative structure. Vocal improvisation adds a further dimension to the work, employing the power of free moving sound to expand the range of what is possible for each participant.
Participant reflections:
‘Recently I’ve come to look at performative work as part of my practice, and I've been unsure how to approach what I am trying to achieve. I attended a recent Impulse in Art workshop not knowing what to expect, after my initial apprehension I found that the way it was led, and how Naomi coached us meant I was put at ease very quickly. I was able to do things in ways I never thought I would. We talked about being responsive to another person, and for this to be a natural form and whilst initially this can feel unnatural and intimidating I was surprised by how quickly I was able to relax into the process, and find my way towards things that were surprising. I would love to work with Naomi again and see what else it can draw out of me as an artist.’ Jen Hamblin, Artist.
